Social media has been blamed for another teenage death recently. Emma Green passed away last weekend and her parents have blamed social media for her death, claiming it’s far too easy for young teenagers to be exposed to hate and bullying on sites like Instagram and Snapchat. Emma was only fifteen years old when she suffered nasty anonymous comments on Snapchat that led to her suicide.
This incident should alarm our society. We should be questioning how beneficial social media is to teenagers as this isn’t the first incident and it certainly won’t be the last. Social media has its positives but it’s hard to ignore the constant distractions and unrealistic lifestyle that teenagers are bombarded with on an hourly basis. Anonymous message engines linked to social media have become more and more common and this is where most of the hate can appear as the perpetrators have no identity. Green’s parents stated that their fifteen-year-old was a victim of anonymous hate messages and have no doubt they contributed to her devastating passing.
Where do we go from here, ask Green’s parents as well as many others. We have to clamp down on this and look at social media and question whether it’s beneficial for teenagers to be using on such an excessive basis.
